General Eligibility for Citizenship through Naturalization

To apply for citizenship using Form N-400, applicants must generally meet the following requirements:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have held lawful permanent resident (LPR) status for at least 5 years (or 3 years in certain cases)
- Have continuously resided in the U.S. for the past 5 years
- Have been physically present in the U.S. for at least 913 days (or 548 days under the 3-year rule)
- Have lived in the state of application for at least 3 months
- Demonstrate good moral character
- Be able to speak, read, and write in English and pass a U.S. history and civics exam (unless exempt due to age, length of residency, or medical reasons)
