In 2025, the IRC in Silver Spring’s Economic Empowerment program helped over 300 newcomers secure employment. To enable self-sufficiency, the Economic Empowerment program supports newcomers to acquire entry-level through longer term career jobs. The program supports newcomers by sharing resources, job readiness trainings and tailored assistance, guiding clients, like Ryan, towards their goals.
After fleeing conflict in Cameroon, Ryan arrived in the U.S. in 2024 with his mother, father and sibling. A former shopkeeper and student, Ryan was eager to draw on previous work experiences and continue developing professional skills to match the professional landscape in the U.S.
Ryan enrolled in the IRC’s Entry-Level Employment program, which supports newcomers first establishing their footing in the U.S.; Ryan worked closely with IRC employment specialist Mohammad to create a resume, submit job applications and prepare for interviews. Mohammad equipped Ryan with information about U.S. workplace norms, from professional communication to self-advocacy. With patience, preparation and motivation, Ryan secured his first job as a Warehouse Associate at Amazon.
“The IRC has supported my long-term employment goals by helping me build a strong resume and assisting me with applying for different job opportunities."
After a newcomer establishes their first job, the IRC’s Career Pathways team supports clients to reach higher pay and greater stability through job upgrades, vocational training and mentorship. While maintaining his employment at Amazon, Ryan worked with his Career Pathways employment specialist, Julia, to enroll in English courses, update his resume, establish U.S. employer references and practice interview strategies. With this increased confidence, Ryan seamlessly began a new full-time higher-paying role at Target, seeing a 15% rise in his hourly wages.
Only two years after his arrival, Ryan secured multiple roles progressing in pay rate and matching his interests. Ryan remains motivated to strengthening his skills and reaching his goal of working in Information Technology. He continues to work with his employment specialists to identify scholarships and other resources to achieve his goal. The Economic Empowerment program at the IRC in Silver Spring is proud to share the stories of newcomers like Ryan, driving the charge to change their lives for the better.
