In response to Gov. Greg Abbott’s plan to withdraw the state from the federal refugee resettlement program, Donna Duvin, executive director of the International Rescue Committee in Dallas, said the following:

“Governor Abbott’s plan to withdraw the state from the federal refugee resettlement program is completely out of touch with Texas values. The IRC has resettled refugee families in the state for decades and has consistently seen communities overwhelmingly embrace refugees in their schools, jobs and places of worship. While the Governor scapegoats innocent families, Texans continue to open their arms to welcome refugees in need.

“Refugee families have lost their homes, their jobs, and friends and family to violence and war. They want nothing more than to live a peaceful life. The Governor’s actions cannot obstruct our moral obligation to protect and welcome the world’s most vulnerable. The International Rescue Committee will stand ready to ensure these families have the services and support they need to rebuild their lives. We will ensure that his actions cannot further destabilize the lives of those who have waited months and even years to come to the state and begin anew.”
