On June 6th, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and Refugee Advocacy Lab (the Lab) will host the upcoming States Lay the Foundation Summit - highlighting the successes and opportunities for policies that support refugee resettlement and integration across the United States.

The Summit - the fourth annual hosted by IRC and the Refugee Advocacy Lab - will feature bipartisan panel conversations between state legislators from across the U.S. on the pivotal role states play in supporting refugee integration and ensuring newcomers are welcomed to their new communities. Panelists will speak to the impact of legislation they have introduced to address access to higher education and economic empowerment, as well as how this contributes to the successful integration of newcomers in their homes. Policy experts from the IRC and Refugee Advocacy Lab will share best practices for identifying and scaling welcoming policies across other US states.

Genevieve Kessler, IRC Director of State Advocacy, said:

"State legislators play a critical role in implementing solutions that respond to community needs and those joining us for the summit recognize that refugees and immigrants are vital to that solution equation. Whether it’s addressing barriers to education and employment or investing in language access for integration- these speakers represent a sample of elected leaders in states who are laying the foundation for more inclusive and welcoming communities.”

Kate Brick, Director of the Refugee Advocacy Lab, said:

“States continue to lead the way when it comes to thinking innovatively to advance policy solutions and programs that reduce barriers and create the conditions for refugees and other newcomers to thrive. We look forward to highlighting bipartisan leadership from around the country on how this work can be successful, and the incredible impact it can have on American communities when states proactively welcome people seeking safety in the United States.”

The Summit will be virtually held on June 6th, 12PM-2PM EDT. Interested attendees can register for the event online.
