The International Rescue Committee is deeply saddened to announce we have lost a staff member today in the large-scale attack in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu. We mourn the loss of our colleague and are humbled by his bravery.

This appalling incident is another tragic reminder of the risks our staff face around the world every day.

Said David Miliband, President and CEO of the IRC:

The IRC is devastated at the loss of a valued colleague and friend in Somalia. ‬‪This tragic death reminds us that most aid workers are in their own country trying to improve their communities. ‬

‪My condolences go to all his family and the family and friends of all those killed in this terrible attack.‬ Humanitarians can staunch the dying but we depend on politics to stop the killing.

We need creative diplomacy in Somalia and elsewhere more than ever‬.
