Arizona is facing a major shift in food assistance following the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) in July 2025. This legislation significantly restricts SNAP eligibility for non-citizens, including refugees, asylees, and other vulnerable groups who previously relied on immediate access to benefits. With poverty rates high and thousands of families affected, local food banks and community organizations are reporting increased demand and empty shelves. These changes not only impact food security but also ripple through health, education, and workforce development, making community support and advocacy more critical than ever.

New Roots, a program of the IRC in Salt Lake City, oversees 12 community garden sites in the Salt Lake Valley, helping refugee families access personal plots of land to grow food for their households.
