SCOPE OF VOLUNTEER WORK: The IRC in Salt Lake City seeks volunteer tutors to support English language learning among recently arrived adult refugees, typically women with young children, who have fled persecution in their home country and are rebuilding their lives in Utah. Under the supervision of the ESL Program Coordinator, volunteer tutors will provide one-on-one and/or small group instruction in the client's home, IRC office, or one of New Roots garden or farm sites, promoting English language skills needed to empower the most vulnerable of newly arrived refugees, to obtain and retain employment and achieve self-sufficiency. Tutors should be able to create a welcoming environment that fosters community and learning among program participants and should be able to interact with diverse populations effectively.

COMMITMENT: 2 hours a week for at least 3 months once volunteer training is complete. Details about the next steps are outlined below. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide guided and personalized ESL instruction to refugees from varying backgrounds
  • Follow the guidelines of IRC program including pre and post assessments of client progress
  • Track and report student progress to supervisor though monthly updates
  • Report volunteer hours through online Salesforce database
  • Fill the role of ESL tutor providing basic ESL support not caseworker

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Experience or demonstrated interest in teaching English as a Second Language for limited English speakers
  • ESL certification such as TESOL, TOSEL, TEFL, or CELTA preferred
  • Available at least 2 hours per week for 3 months 
  • Strong desire to help refugee adult students achieve their potential
  • Ability to communicate and converse effectively in a multicultural environment
  • Attend an ESL training with the IRC in Salt Lake City
  • Submit volunteer hours on a monthly basis.
  • Background check required
  • Donation of $45 to cover the cost of the background check

NEXT STEPS:

  1. We ask all new volunteers to attend an info session within 30 days of starting as a volunteer with us, ideally before. You can view info session dates on our website here.
  2. Attend required, 2 hour training on August 21st from 6-8pm. Sign up for the training here
  3. Complete and clear an online background check, for which we ask for a $45 donation to cover the cost. Details about this will be sent out to those who attend training.
