Scope of Service

The intern will work with the Development team to create and give tailored presentations for various community groups such as faith communities, businesses, and clubs / associations. The intern will create posts about these activities and other successes in the agency on social media. The intern will also help design and organize materials for a monthly newsletter to further engage the community. 


  • Complete research on refugee resettlement, UNHCR statistics, IRC history, and other topics needed to elevate the work of IRC Des Moines 
  • Create PowerPoint slides and handouts on Canva or similar programs regarding refugee resettlement and the work of IRC in the community to increase support for the organization 
  • Create regular posts on new social media accounts regarding client and program success at IRC Des Moines to raise our visibility and generate in-kind donations and volunteers 
  • Create original content, including photos and articles, to be used in a new IRC monthly newsletter that will be distributed via Salesforce 
  • Research other organizations that have an aligned mission that could potentially partner with IRC Des Moines to increase outcomes.   

Time Commitment and Duration

Up to 15 hours per week, spring semester January through May, up to 240 hours 

Learning Objectives

  • The intern will gain skills related to marketing and journalism through creating original material for social media, community presentations, and newsletters 
  • The intern will increase public speaking skills and learn ways to engage different types of audiences 
  • The intern will increase understanding of the refugee and immigration systems in the United States 


This position is unpaid

Skills and Qualifications

  • Comfort with public speaking required 
  • Ability to handle sensitive client information confidentially    
  • Experience with platforms such as Canva, PowerPoint, Publisher, etc desired 
  • Experience leveraging social media to recruit volunteers and community partners desired 
  • Proven ability to demonstrate patience, understanding, and flexibility  
  • A willingness to work with, and take direction from, program staff 
  • Strong intercultural communication skills including demonstrated ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and across language barriers 
  • Strong organizational and communication skills  
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team 
  • Willing to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies, including current Covid-19 policies (must be fully vaccinated, meaning first 2 shots. Boosters recommended.)
