Background: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover and gain control of their future. IRC teams provide health, infrastructure, learning and economic support to people in 50+ countries worldwide. The IRC also provides support to thousands of refugees resettling in 29 U.S. cities each year through initial housing assistance; case management and referral services; job readiness and placement; community and cultural orientation; health and wellness programs; immigration services; and youth programs.
Scope of Volunteer Work: The New Roots program at IRC Seattle works to reconnect clients who are rebuilding their lives in the United States with the land and a chance to grow culturally important produce in their new home country. The team is seeking a dependable volunteer able to contribute to the program by helping with planting, harvesting, weeding, and general upkeep help for our farmers and staff at Horseneck Farm.
Location: Horseneck Farm, 26826 86th Ave S, Kent, WA 98030
Time Commitment: 2+ regular hours per week, Tuesday or Friday mornings
Essential Position Functions:
With instruction of New Roots staff, plant seeds as instructed
Harvesting, washing, packing produce with farmers in preparation of selling at Tukwila Farmers' Market
General farm upkeep, including weeding, maintenance of farm structures, laying mulch paths, garbage disposal, etc.
