Description
The IRC in Denver's legal program provides representation to asylum seekers from around the world through our network of pro bono attorneys. Attorneys who sign up to represent clients are mentored and supported by our in-house legal team throughout the lifetime of the case and have access to our suite of CLE courses, ongoing trainings and annual Asylum Law Conference. Please note this opportunity is for licensed attorneys only.
Purpose
The importance of representation in an asylum case is greater now than ever as clients navigate our complex immigration system amongst rapidly changing law and policy. Representation increases an asylum applicant's chances of winning their case by 3 or 4 times over those who are unrepresented. The IRC fills the gap for non-detained asylum seekers unable to afford the cost of private attorneys. This is a meaningful opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those who seek safety in the United States.
Role
This opportunity is for licensed attorneys only. Attorneys are responsible for preparing applications and supporting evidence, prepping for and attending court hearings and advising clients on the next steps in their case. Asylum cases before the Denver Immigration Court can pend anywhere from one to several years. Attorneys should be prepared for a long-term volunteer commitment. Attorneys outside of the Denver metro area can prepare cases remotely but should be ready to travel to Denver for any scheduled court appearances.
