BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 26 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home.

SCOPE OF VOLUNTEER WORK: At the NYC Resettlement, Asylum and Integration (RAI) office, the School Success Team helps newly arrived families to navigate the NYC public school system. In addition to providing school enrollment assistance and academic coaching, the team is looking to begin an afterschool program focused on providing social emotional learning (SEL) opportunities to refugee/newcomer youth. The Social Emotional Learning Volunteers (SEL Volunteers) will play a critical role in this program, providing essential linguistic, cultural, and community-rooted support.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the guidance of the School Success Team, the SEL Intern will work on the following:
• Assisting staff with facilitating various SEL-based activities and lessons, as well as with classroom management, 1-2 times weekly
• Acting as a positive role model for students
• Completing all training prior to the start of the program, as well as all program meetings and staff development activities thereafter
• Translation is a key component of this role, but is not sufficient by itself; volunteers must play an active role in creating knowledge during the program, making sense of the presented material in relation to linguistic and cultural differences/ways of knowing

 

REQUIREMENTS: Competitive applications will represent most/all of the following:
• High school graduate OR current senior;
• Fluency in written/verbal English AND another language required; strong preference given to candidates who speak Dari, Pashto, Ukrainian, Spanish, and/or Arabic;
• 1-2 years of experience working with children and/or refugee communities preferred;
• Self-directed, patient, kind, and team player;
• Willing to adhere to IRC intern and workplace policies
