BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 22 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. Domestically, our 22 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.
SCOPE OF WORK: A mentorship program recently resettled youth (ages 15-24) that aims to build confidence and self-sufficiency in areas such as education, personal finance, and employment through access to information and resources.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Meet with recently arrived teens and young adults ages 15-24, for weekly or biweekly sessions depending on the availability of both parties. Determine the needs of your mentee and work with them to clearly define goals and devise strategies to achieve them.
• Prepare for each weekly session from an established catalogue of lesson plans and community resources, with guidance from program coordinators as needed.
• Connect mentees with other community resources depending on their needs.
• Write session notes after each meeting. Curriculum topics include financial literacy, education, employment, and a positive sense of identity.
• Submit monthly reports to be taken from the aforementioned session notes.
REQUIREMENTS:
• Proficiency in a second language such as Ukrainian, Dari, Pashto, and/or Spanish required.
• Demonstrated relevant experience in human services field, including providing direct service to underserved communities. Prior experience working with refugee populations preferred.
• Experience in a non-profit or social services setting is an advantage.
• Attention to detail and ability to organize and track large amounts of information efficiently and accurately.
• Familiarity with personal finance topics and core tenets of financial planning strongly preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong computer skills, particularly Word and Excel.
• Ability to work independently, be a self-starter and maintain responsibility for multiple tasks.
This position reports to the Financial Education Coordinator.
