The Education & Training Department at the International Rescue Committee in San Diego supports refugee, asylee, and immigrant individuals on their path toward long-term success through youth education, career development, and language learning. Our programs equip newcomers with the tools, knowledge, and confidence they need to thrive in their communities and achieve their educational and professional goals. 

 

Our Programs

 

Youth Program

Since 1996, our Youth Program has supported newly arrived refugee youth in navigating the U.S. school system, developing English language skills, and gaining leadership experience. Our holistic approach helps students succeed in school, graduate, and confidently transition to college or a career.

Higher Learning Navigation (HLN) Program

The HLN program supports young adults in their transition from high school to higher education through one-on-one guidance on college preparation, college applications, financial aid, and scholarship opportunities. Many HLN participants have longstanding relationships with IRC, built during their high school years.

Career Program 

IRC’s Career Program helps participants advance toward long-term, stable employment through industry-recognized certifications and individualized career coaching. Ideal for individuals with prior U.S. work experience, this program supports clients in reaching their career goals with a focus on in-demand industries.

Eligibility: 

 

Vocational English as a Second Language (VESL) Plus Program

The VESL Plus Program provides a supportive environment where clients improve their English while gaining critical employment skills. Tailored for newly arrived individuals, VESL Plus equips clients with practical tools for success in the American workforce. 

Key Features: 

Eligibility: Must be ORR-eligible and have at least one dependent child under 18 in the household. Eligible statuses include: 

Must have been in the U.S. for less than 5 years.
