These four IRC sector-specific case studies (health, education, child protection and social protection) show how diverse partnerships in programme delivery can strengthen government systems, improve cost efficiencies and scale solutions - including in fragile and conflict affected settings. Humanitarian organizations like the IRC operate in crisis contexts for decades, yet without strong national systems to deliver quality services, the impact of life-saving and recovery support provided to people and facilities cannot last much longer than the lifespan of the interventions.

The direct impact of investing in national and local systems strengthening is improved and inclusive front-line service delivery, contributing to better outcomes for clients and greater reach and scale of interventions. Strengthened systems also make the recurrence of a crisis less likely and reduce the severity of crises once they occur. With a new geography of crisis emerging from places where conflict, climate risks, and poverty converge in devastating ways, it is more important than ever that the system innovates and strengthens proven approaches.
