A Syrian mother stopping with her family on the island of Lesbos, Greece — one of more than half a million desperate people who have fled to Europe this year from countries in chaos. Unscrupulous smugglers have forced many of them to hand over more money than they agreed to pay for the dangerous crossing in overcrowded boats and have thrown bags with refugees' few remaining posessions into the sea.

The International Rescue Committee is providing urgently needed relief to the refugees as they arrive on the island, referring the most vulnerable families to Pikpa camp, a temporary shelter where they can receive additional support.
