SCOPE OF VOLUNTEER SERVICE: In an effort to ensure equitable access to RC programs and classes, we work with volunteers to help with on-site child watch services. Volunteers will supervise and entertain children aged 2-16 to allow their mothers to focus on participating in IRC programming including ESL tutoring, job training classes and cultural orientation programs. Volunteers oversee activities, organize art projects, facilitate indoor games such as puzzles and blocks, play sports and hide-and-seek, and are also welcome to develop their own activities to keep the youth engaged.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise and entertain children aged 2-16
  • Volunteer on a team of 2-4 and never be alone with a child 
  • Creatively engage children in activities with limited resources
  • Refrain rom disciplining children, but instead model preferred behavior
  • May be asked to provide transportation for clients and their children

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be 14 or older
  • Clear an IRC background check for which we ask for a donation of $45 to cover the cost
  • Ability to discern the difference between education and disciplining
  • Able to mediate and problem solve challenges that arise
  • Personable, flexible, and calm under stress
  • Experience working with diverse populations preferred
  • Able to find creative ways to communicate with children with limited English language skills
