TITLE: College Readiness Volunteer – El Cajon

LOCATION: IRC El Cajon office, 131 E Main Street

START DATE: On a rolling basis

Time Commitment: 4 months starting; 4 - 8 hours per week; 

*Must be able to keep at least 4 regular office hours per week (during Monday-Friday 8:30am-5pm)

 

SCOPE OF VOLUNTEER WORK: IRC youth programs aim to empower local refugees and newly arrived immigrants. Whether someone needs help enrolling in school, finding work, attaining job training and higher education, or planning out a long-term career, they can find support in the IRC youth programs department. As a volunteer, the work will be instrumental in making higher education and career goals possible for people seeking assistance in the college, financial aid, and scholarship application processes.  

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: The volunteer will be responsible for learning about the application processes, with support from IRC staff and materials). During a shift, a volunteer will call clients to make appointments to work with them, and meet with clients to walk them through the college and financial aid application processes, helping to make sure they are able to successfully submit applications.

  • Learn about various college-related application processes, especially as pertains to people with refugee and special immigrant visas
  • Make and keep appointments with clients
  • Help clients apply for college, scholarships, financial aid, or other college-related opportunities

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to keep at least 4 regular office hours per week (during Monday-Friday 8:30am-5pm)
  • Previous college-related application experience NOT required, but preferred
  • Must be willing to learn about and become familiar with college and financial aid application processes
  • Age 18+
  • Previous multi-cultural experience and demonstrated ability to communicate well with people of varied English-speaking abilities preferred

 

This position reports to the Intergenerational Education Coordinator.
