SCOPE OF ROLE: The Health Orientation Volunteer will conduct one-on-one orientations to the US healthcare system for clients or client families. This position will help our clients better understand how to access medical care in the US, what their rights are when accessing healthcare, and when to seek additional support. It will enable clients to independently access medical care, prioritizing their physical health and wellbeing.

COMMITMENT: 

  • Days and times: Thursdays with shifts from 10-11:30am and 11:30am-1pm
  • Frequency: weekly or biweekly
  • Hours: 1.5-3 hours (preference for clients to conduct back-to-back shifts for the full 3 hour time if possible)

LOCATION: Client home (typically Richmond city or Henrico)

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Meet client at their home
  • Conduct pre-orientation assessment to gauge client’s understanding of US healthcare systems
  • Provide information and instruction to client in utilizing US healthcare system
  • Conduct post-orientation assessment to gauge client’s new understanding of US healthcare systems
  • Coordinate with health liaison to receive assessment before orientations and to submit assessment after orientation
  • Follow-up with health liaison regarding any issues or ongoing questions clients have or needs for care that are expressed

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Comfortable learning to work with a remote interpreter
  • Ability to adhere to IRC professional standards and volunteer policies including those around boundaries, confidentiality, COVID-19, etc.
