Job Title: Housing Intern - Spring 2026

BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world's worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 29 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity, and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home.
SCOPE OF WORK: The Housing Intern will support landlord engagement and housing development efforts for the PIR program. Responsibilities will include meeting with existing landlords to maintain and strengthen partnerships. The intern will also help plan and host one Landlord/Property Management Open House to create opportunities for current and prospective landlords to engage with the program and learn about partnership benefits.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
- The intern will gain hands-on experience in housing case management, including conducting housing searches, communicating with landlords, and supporting clients through the lease-up process.
- The intern will develop knowledge of local housing systems, rental assistance programs, and affordable housing resources.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The intern will develop and maintain a local Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for tracking landlord outreach efforts, including dates, methods of outreach, number of attempts, and outcomes.
- The intern will focus on building community partnerships by collaborating with local housing providers such as colleges or government agencies that can offer discounted or free temporary housing.
- The intern will work toward securing discounted, low-cost, or free temporary housing units to support client placement needs.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Strong English language proficiency (written and verbal)
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Comfortable initiating contact and building relationships with new partners and landlords
- Professional, proactive, and able to represent the program positively in the community
- Strong research and computer skills
- Familiar with the mission of IRC and willing to represent it appropriately.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively
- Ability to work well with a culturally diverse staff.
