Location: Hybrid schedule - San Jose, CA
Duration: Minimum 3-4 months, 3-6 hours/week
This is an unpaid internship requiring a minimum of 240 hours to be completed during business hours 9a-5p, M-F.
Placement is dependent on completion of a background check and fingerprinting at a cost of $40 each.
SCOPE OF WORK
The Community Engagement Volunteer/Intern will work in coordination with the
Resource & Partnership Development (RPD) department in procuring, organizing, and distributing Contributions-in-Kind (CIK), essential goods that the IRC receives and then donates to resettled refugee and immigrant populations. In this capacity, the volunteer will reach out to potential donors from the surrounding community, procure and organize donated goods, assist in assembling and distributing client requests, and providing general maintenance of IRC storage facilities. Volunteers may also assist with donation valuations, record keeping, improving donation infrastructure and data systems.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
General responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Research donation opportunities from garage sales, estate sales, faith-based organizations,
corporate offices, and other community sources;
• Procure new in-kind donations from the surrounding community, mainly through social media resources including Offer Up, Facebook Marketplace, Buy Nothing Facebook Groups, etc.;
• Support the tracking and valuation of donations received;
• Assemble donation kits, client donation requests from inventory in the warehouse;
• Distribute CIK donations either via scheduled pickups from the office storage closet or via scheduled deliveries;
• Maintain IRC storage facilities, including the warehouse and office storage closet, by organizing shelves and maintaining general tidiness;
REQUIREMENTS:
• Driving is required; must possess a valid driver’s license, proof of active auto insurance, and access to reliable transportation; work-related driving is eligible for reimbursement at the charitable mileage rate;
• Ability to lift 10-20lbs safely;
• Self-starter with excellent problem-solving skills, demonstrated success working and communicating effectively in a multi-cultural environment;
• Must be comfortable with donor outreach via phone and email;
• Digital fluency with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Proficient in digital communications and technology with strong organizational skills;
• Availability during IRC’s standard business hours (Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM) is required.
