The IRC New York Resettlement office’s Family Education program provides free classes and educational services to our adult clients. These individuals, mainly refugees and asylees, are legal immigrants who are victims of war, persecution, and civil conflict. They have diverse cultural and educational backgrounds. Moreover, they are highly adaptable, usually multilingual, and eager to start rebuilding their lives in America.

Cultural Orientation is an intensive social adjustment course for all newly arrived refugees which focuses on essential information for new Americans through content-based instruction.  The class aims to familiarize students with their new environment and prepare them for the daily challenges of living as part of the New York City community. Instruction is highly structured, with an emphasis on strong English language support and performance-based outcomes.  The use of multimedia, context-embedded language, and authentic learning experiences support comprehension for clients of all language proficiency levels.
