Background: The International Rescue Committee responds to some of the world’s most urgent humanitarian crises, helping people whose lives and livelihoods have been shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover, and regain control of their future. The IRC supports vulnerable individuals including refugees, asylees, survivors of trafficking, and survivors of torture as they work to rebuild safety and stability in their lives. For fifty years in Washington State, the IRC Seattle office has helped people regain their footing, pursue their goals, and strengthen the communities they call home.
Scope of Volunteer Position: The Volunteer Financial Literacy Coach plays a vital role in advancing our mission by providing supportive, strengths-based financial education and guidance to program participants. Coaches work one-on-one or in small group settings to help individuals develop practical money management skills, set achievable financial goals, and build confidence in their financial decision-making.
This role is ideal for professionals, retirees, students, or community members passionate about economic empowerment and service.
Location: This is a remote position. If interested in working from the IRC office, we can accommodate that. The office is located in SeaTac, WA.
Time Commitment: Approximately 4-5 hours per month. We plan to have 1-2 workshops per month on different themes.
Responsibilities:
- Provide individualized financial coaching sessions (in-person or virtual)
- Assist participants with:
- Creating and maintaining budgets
- Setting short- and long-term financial goals
- Developing savings plans and emergency funds
- Understanding and improving credit
- Managing and reducing debt
- Facilitate or co-facilitate financial literacy workshops using IRC-provided curriculum
- Help participants complete action plans and track progress
- Maintain confidential participant records in accordance with nonprofit policies
- Refer clients to community resources and partner organizations when appropriate
- Participate in required volunteer training and periodic program meetings
Ideal Candidate:
- Commitment to the IRC’s mission and values
- Basic understanding of personal finance principles
- Strong listening, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to explain financial concepts in clear, accessible language
- Cultural sensitivity and ability to work with diverse populations
- Professional experience in finance, banking, accounting, education, social services, or related fields (preferred but not required)
