The IRC’s Center for Financial Opportunity (CFO) helps newcomers and other low-income individuals reach self-sufficiency by finding entry-level employment and progress to living wage jobs, learn basic financial management skills and build assets, and start small businesses. Core to CFO, is the Career Development program which supports refugees, immigrants, and other underserved community members in San Diego County to obtain careers that provide greater self-sufficiency, job security, and opportunity for future career advancement. IRC’s Career Programs serves immigration impacted youth ages 18-26. Career Program staff deliver intensive career coaching coupled with on-site literacy and workforce preparation activities classes at the IRC and support off-site workforce training with our training partners, so that students are simultaneously improving their literacy skills, work readiness skills, and working toward a certificate.
SCOPE OF WORK
IRC’s Career Programs focuses on specific careers such as Allied Healthcare, Automotive Technology, Office Business, and Helpdesk Technician – high-growth and in-demand sectors in San Diego. Professional mentors will share their expertise with the youth participants, and provide guidance, feedback, and support to the mentee post sector specific training, serving variously as role model, advisor, coach, advocate, and ally, depending on the specific goals set by the mentee and objectives negotiated between mentors and the mentee.
RESPONSIBLITIES
- Follow up with the mentee on the specific goals and objectives set out by mentee and the Career Development Coordinator
- Commitment to fostering the relationship with the mentee post training for a period of one year
- Meet with mentee on a regular basis, not normally during the mentee's work time, no less than two hours per month
- Mentors will help clients navigate industry specific job market by providing insights on what skills and attitudes employers are looking for, how to tailor their resumes to specific job opportunities, provide insight on the different pathways into an industry, and facilitate networking and employment opportunities
- Provides encouragement and assists the mentee in identifying professional development activities and follows through on commitments made to mentee
- Provides frank, honest, and constructive feedback but allows the mentee to take responsibility for their growth, development, and career planning
- Inform supervisor of mentoring activities
REQUIREMENTS
- At least two years of professional experience related to Allied Healthcare, Automotive Technology, Office Business, and Helpdesk Technician
- Experience working in a culturally diverse, and non-traditional setting with diverse and multi-lingual clients
- Prior volunteering experience in a non-profit setting specifically working with refugees or immigrants is a plus
- Working environment will be remote or hybrid on occasion
