Background: The IRC Phoenix Youth Education Department provides refugee and other immigrant youth with year-round academic support, English language learning, and enrichment activities.  The IRC Phoenix Youth Education Department programs provide refugee youth with linguistically supportive, culturally responsive, trauma-informed learning opportunities.  

 

Scope of Work: IRC Volunteer Youth Tutors provide tutoring, mainly consisting of English language development support through the instruction of beginning level English lessons for refugee youth, 6-12 grade. Each tutor works with 1-5 students in small group virtual tutoring sessions. Tutors support each student in increasing their English language proficiency using the English language learner (ELL) curriculum provided. Tutors have the opportunity to develop and implement additional activities as appropriate.  

 

Professional Development: All IRC Phoenix Volunteer Youth Tutors will attend virtual training modules throughout the term, including child safeguarding and working with ELL students. 

 

Essential Position Functions: 

  • Uphold full commitment to weekly schedule of tutoring sessions without absence or tardiness. 
  • Facilitate online lessons and learning activities with refugee students. 
  • Support students from diverse home language backgrounds and English language development levels. 
  • Attend all virtual training modules and supervision check-ins as scheduled. 
  • Uphold and promote policies and practices necessary to create a linguistically supportive, culturally responsive, trauma-informed learning environment. 
  • Uphold all IRC and program and child safeguarding policies and directives. 
  • Work and communicate with IRC staff and student families as needed/appropriate.  
  • Regularly maintain student progress tracking and attendance documents. 
  • Submit a weekly timesheet to track volunteer hours. 

 

Requirements: 

  • Clear IRC background check and obtain fingerprint card by deadline in order to work with minors and/or vulnerable populations. 
  • Attend all Volunteer trainings.   
  • Demonstrate reliability and flexibility. 
  • Demonstrate respect for clients and staff from all racial, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, religious etc. background.
  • Demonstrate a desire to continuously grow own cultural competency. 
  • Demonstrate respect for clients and staff of all identities. 
  • Experience & commitment to education, and in particular education for youth who have experienced forced migration is helpful. 
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English; additional fluency in an IRC high-frequency or high-need language is helpful 
  • Dari/Farsi, Pashto, Kinyarwanda, Arabic, Swahili, Burmese, and others
  • This is a remote volunteer role but will still require proof of Covid19 vaccination

  • Training: Attend mandatory Volunteer Youth Tutor Training  
  • Fall Semester (October-December)
    • First Day of Tutoring with Students: 10/4/2021 
    • Last Day of Tutoring with Students in Fall Term: 12/17/21 
  • Spring Semester (January-May) 
    • First Day of Tutoring with Students: 1/10/2022
    • Last Day of Tutoring with Students in Spring Term: 5/30/2022

 

Position Hours:   

  • Evenings or weekends 
  • 2+ hours of online instruction per week
