Assemblywoman Quijano of the New Jersey state legislature joined IRC clients and staff for a meal in Elizabeth, following her work to sponsor a bill recognizing World Refugee Day in New Jersey. As clients broke bread with their representative, the assemblywoman noted, "in my family, the highest honor you can give someone is to invite them for a meal, so thank you for inviting me to lunch."

In her remarks at the IRC's office in Elizabeth, assemblywoman Quijano affirmed her commitment to her refugee constituents, stating, “America was built on immigrants’ dedication, blood and sweat. This country is great because of all those individuals that came before us, that worked, that wanted that American dream. I am heartsick about what has been going on. And I wanted to make sure we did this resolution so you know that people in New Jersey are supportive and understand the immigrant struggles and we’re not going to just let you be unprotected. So I’m joining you today and I think the International Rescue Committee does great work and I just want you to know my office is around the corner, so it’s always open.”

Assemblywoman Quijano's resolution states that "June 20th of each year shall be designated "World Refugee Day" in New Jersey to call attention to the unbelievable hardships of refugees worldwide and ther importance as residents of this state." The IRC in New Jersey's staff, led by resettlement director Alison Millan, applaud the assemblywoman's work in recognition of the vital role refugees play in New Jersey. This resolution affirms New Jersey's welcoming embrace of refugees as neighbors, community members, and constituents, as Millan noted the IRC's gratitude for "assemblywoman Quijano’s leadership at the state level in getting this resolution passed. This sends a message loud and clear that New Jersey is a state that honors and welcomes the amazing contributions of refugees working hard to rebuild their lives and homes in our communities.”

The IRC in Elizabeth deeply appreciates assemblywoman Quijano's time and commitment to her refugee constituents in New Jersey, and her drive to recognize refugees statewide.
