As the IRC passenger van made its way east on I-90, students looked out the windows in awe. It was a typical fall day in the Pacific Northwest complete with gray skies and a light drizzle - the kind of Saturday you might opt to stay indoors and curl up with a cup of tea and a good book. These kids, however, were in for the outdoor adventure of a lifetime.

Vertical Generation is a Seattle-based non-profit that’s helping to grow a new generation of diverse climbers. Part of that mission is accomplished by partnering with organizations like the IRC and helping youth from underserved communities access climbing opportunities and mentorship. This field trip was extra special because it was the first outdoor climbing event facilitated by Vertical Generation and for the nine refugee youth who participated, their first time venturing out into the PNW wilderness.

Upon arrival the atmosphere was full of excitement. Vertical Generation volunteers provided students with climbing equipment, as well as instructions and demonstrations of proper safety, climbing, and communication techniques. After a full briefing, the teens were raring to go!

As with most new activities, some participants jumped right in without any hesitation, while others were a little more nervous about trying something completely new. Volunteers met each student where they were at and offered encouragement and support the whole way. Throughout the day, each participant pushed themselves to meet new goals. For most participants, climbing up was the fun part and coming back down was the most intimidating. Every participant made it to the top at least once and some went up more than nine times!

The outdoor climbing field trip was truly an empowering experience for participants. It involved stepping outside of one’s comfort zone, trusting and respecting the volunteer mentors, and pushing oneself both physically and mentally. Students experienced a sense of achievement and confidence – as evidenced by the immense smiles on their faces.

Thank you to Vertical Generations and their partners for making this unique and memorable experience possible for IRC youth program participants. We can’t wait for the next adventure!
