Before the Refugee Act of 1980, refugee resettlement in the U.S. was largely conducted privately or through community groups. The act, however, standardized the process and today most refugees in the U.S. are primarily welcomed through resettlement agencies, such as the International Rescue Committee. The IRC in Denver recognized that Colorado communities have always been eager to step up and welcome newcomers, and thus the concept of community sponsorships was developed. These community sponsorships pair IRC in Denver's clients with enthusiastic community groups (such as businesses, university communities, faith groups, sports teams, or local clubs) who are willing to provide support and thus ensure a successful welcome and integration of an arriving family into our local communities.

Welcome

One such group is the IRC in Denver's co-sponsor group Welcome Home, headed by Alexa W., and consisting of six community members from the Denver metro area all with one joint goal - helping the MBOKA family successfully resettle in Denver. Finally, on September 19th 2023, after months of preparations, three members of Welcome Home -Monica J., Brenda T., and Alison W., - excitedly waited at the Denver International Airport to welcome and embrace "their" newcomers and to support them in their journey of starting anew.

"The joyous arrival of the MBOKA family was a momentous occasion for both the family and the Welcome Home Co-sponsor group,"

describes Homayoon Milad - Community Engagement Manager at the IRC in Denver - the occasion.

"In a world so often plagued by division and discord, the story of the MBOKA family's arrival  truly serves as a beacon of hope and unity."

After their first night in Denver, the family attended a comprehensive intake session at the IRC in Denver's office. This session not only provided them with essential information and resources but also served as a platform for them to begin connecting with their newfound community.

"It was a day of empowerment, as the family realized they were not alone in their journey. The support and guidance offered by the community instilled a sense of confidence and hope for the future,"

says Homayoon and then explains that:

"The events that unfolded during their initial days in Denver further highlight the power of community support and the transformative effects of inclusivity."

Without doubt, one of the most memorable events during the MBOKA family's initial days in Denver was a friendly soccer match organized by Welcome Home volunteer Bob W., a dedicated member of the Co-sponsor group. The sight of MBOKA family children and people from different backgrounds running freely on the green grass at the community park, united by their love for the beautiful game of soccer, was a powerful testament to the ability of sports to dissolve cultural barriers and foster a sense of unity and common purpose. Laughter and smiles filled the air. Bonds of human connection were formed creating a lasting relationship.

Another heartwarming event that showcased the spirit of community unity was an afternoon barbecue reception, hosted by Welcome Home volunteer Mary B. and the Co- sponsor group. The tantalizing aroma of fresh food provided by the co-sponsor group brought the MBOKA family and their newfound friends together to share a meal. Conversations flowed effortlessly. Stories were exchanged. Games were played. Music and song and laughter reverberated throughout the gathering.

"The simple act of coming together over a shared meal demonstrates the power of human connection and the warmth that can be found in a supportive community,"

says Homayoon and concludes:

"The events surrounding the MBOKA family's arrival in Denver exemplify the profound impact that community support can have on individuals and families seeking refuge. The IRC in Denver and the Welcome Home Co-sponsor group embody the true essence of compassion and acceptance, offering not only practical assistance but also emotional support and a sense of belonging. Through their actions, they showed that a united community can provide a lifeline to those in need, helping them rebuild their lives and find hope in the face of adversity."
