The International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Phoenix welcomes volunteers who wish to support refugees, asylum seekers, survivors of violence and trafficking, and other vulnerable community members. The process below outlines each step required to begin volunteering while ensuring client safety and compliance with state and federal regulations.
1. Complete the Volunteer Application
Submit the online volunteer application when you are ready to begin the process. Once received, your application will be reviewed by the appropriate IRC staff member.
2. Participate in a Virtual Interview
You will virtually meet with the Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator, Development Coordinator, or relevant program staff to discuss your interests, experience, skills, and availability. This conversation ensures a strong match between your goals and current IRC needs.
3. Receive a Position Recommendation
Based on your interview, the Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator or Development Coordinator will recommend a placement aligned with your strengths and the organization’s ongoing priorities.
4. Complete Clearance Requirements
Clearance requirements vary by role and level of client interaction. Your coordinator will inform you which tier applies to your position.
For ongoing volunteers serving clients (with or without staff present) and all interns:
- Background Check – $20
- Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card – $73
- Central Background Registry – Free
For one‑time volunteers (events, New Roots Days of Service, minimal/no client contact):
- Complete a one‑time volunteer waiver only
Note: If cost is a barrier, please mention this during your interview—assistance or alternative placements may be available.
Note: There are specific policies IRC has around minors (under 18) volunteering with IRC. Please email VolunteerPHX@rescue.org for more information.
5. Submit Required Documentation
After accepting a role, ongoing volunteers are asked to:
- Contribute $20 toward the cost of background checks
- Sign three required waivers: Direct Service Position Waiver, Authorization for Release, and the Volunteer Service Agreement
- Complete the Centralized Background Check (CBC)
- Apply for a non‑IVP Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card (if you do not already have a valid card)
- Complete the HireRight background check
- Review The IRC Way (policies, procedures, and standards)
6. Attend Orientation
Once all clearances are complete and your placement is confirmed, you will attend an orientation session. Topics include office procedures, communication guidelines, and confidentiality expectations. Additional training opportunities may be offered throughout your service.
7. Begin Volunteering
Most volunteers contribute 2–5 hours per week, supporting IRC staff and clients through meaningful, service‑oriented roles that strengthen newcomer integration and community resilience.
