Volunteering in Garden City, Kansas

Jane is the IRC in Garden City’s first volunteer ESL tutor specifically for youth. Jane expressed her love of teaching and interest in the growing diversity of our community at a Volunteer Information meeting hosted by the IRC. At the time Jane and she asked if there was a way that she could become involved with some of the children resettled by the IRC.

When our client, Ibrahim, was first enrolled in elementary school in America, his teacher asked if it was possible to introduce Ibrahim to a volunteer to provide him with a tutor to supplement his lessons. Jane was the perfect fit and was introduced to Ibrahim last Spring. Since being matched up with Ibrahim and his family, Jane visits the family at least twice a week and she helps Ibrahim with basic concepts such as numbers and the alphabet. Last school year she accompanied his parents to parent-teacher conferences and even assisted his family with helping him join his school’s soccer team.

To Ibrahim, Jane is “Teacher Jane!” whom he greets with a big hug every time they study together. Volunteers such as Jane are important in helping young children to retain what they have learned in school during the summer months and the staff of the IRC recognizes her great work.  For more information about volunteering contact [email protected] to find out how you may become involved today!
