Location: IRC Office in City Heights and pop-up migrant centers

Time Commitment: Minimum 3 month commitment; Minimum 10 hours per week, must have some open availability on Wednesdays 

Scope of Volunteer Role: The IRC San Diego has a Safety and Wellness Unit aimed at providing case management support to survivors of crime and asylum-seekers in need of long term assistance. The Unit coordinates with other organizations throughout IRC to connect clients to supportive services. The Asylum-Seekers Support Volunteer will assist the Case Management Coordinator to help new arrivals navigate accessing resources and services throughout San Diego so clients can meet their basic needs and secure a measure of safety.

Responsibilites: The volunteers’ main priorities are supporting the Case Management Coordinator in providing comprehensive case management and collaboration with community partners. These tasks could look like teaching clients how to take public transportation, appointment accompaniment, administrative tasks such as program enrollment, and researching and gathering community resources.             

Requirements:

  • Strong communication skills and ability to work in a fast pace environment
  • Experience volunteering or working with immigrants, refugees, and/or asylum-seekers
  • Demonstrated success working and communicating effectively in a multi-cultural environment
  • Has the ability to navigate community resources and advocate for services with clients
  • Able to drive clients to appointments if necessary (has license and car insurance, IRC can reimburse for mileage based on CA standards)
  • Russian language skills are required
  • Minimum 10 hours per week, must have some open availability on Wednesdays

Training/Preparation:

  • Attend a general IRC Orientation (1 hour)
  • Additional one on one staff training

This position reports directly to the Asylum-Seeking Case Management Coordinator, and indirectly to the Safety and Wellness Supervisor.
