SCOPE OF ROLE: The Public Benefits Volunteer will work with the Economic Empowerment Department by assisting clients in reapplying for public benefits programs for which they are eligible. This role will support clients outside of their initial resettlement period who are still working toward self-sufficiency and require additional support in the interim, ensuring that they have the means to meet their families' needs!

COMMITMENT: 

Days and times: flexible based on client and volunteer availability (Monday-Friday between 9:00am and 5:00pm helpful in case in-person appointments are required)
Frequency: intermittent (biweekly or less)
Hours: 1-2 hours per shift

LOCATION: Client home (Richmond or Henrico), possibly social services office.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Help clients fill out applications on social services' online platform, Common Help
  • Help clients reapply for benefits that they are eligible for
  • Follow up with Economic Empowerment Department with any updates, concerns, or unanswered questions
  • Transport client to and attend appointments at social services office with client, if needed

REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Basic understanding of DSS benefits programs (SNAP, TANF, WIC, etc.) a plus
  • Patience
  • Flexibility
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to adhere to IRC professional standards and volunteer policies including those around boundaries, confi dentiality, COVID-19, etc.
