Scope of Work

Child-watch Volunteers support IRC Oakland’s weekly sewing support group for Afghan women, many of whom bring their children in order to participate. As a volunteer, you will play a vital role in helping these mothers access community wellness programs by supervising their children in designated play areas while they engage in sewing group curriculum and activities. These groups are designed to teach psychosocial stress management techniques and foster community, in tandem with teaching a new skill which can provide economic opportunities and independence. 
 

BACKGROUND

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 45 countries and 29 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. Domestically, our 29 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.
 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with child-watch during sewing support group for children ages 0-5
  • Engage children with games, books, and other activities, and allow their mothers to focus on sewing support
    group curriculum and activities
  • Other duties as assigned
     

REQUIREMENTS

  • Enthusiastic about helping others and contributing to IRC’s mission
  • Responsibility, ability to communicate effectively, and timeliness
  • Enjoy working with children
  • Previous childcare experience
  • Fluency in Dari/Farsi preferred but not required
     

This position reports to the Health and Wellness Coordinator or Promoter

  • This is an unpaid volunteer opportunity
  • Acceptance is contingent upon clearing a $40 background check
