SCOPE OF ROLE: The Digital Literacy Volunteer will assist the Economic Empowerment program in teaching clients' digital skills for them to gain practical knowledge and proficiency in using computers, smartphones, and other digital devices, as well as navigating various software applications and online platforms. Improved digital literacy enables clients to access a wealth of information and resources available online, including educational materials, job opportunities, government services, healthcare information, and more while they are working to be economically self-sufficient in the US!

COMMITMENT: 

  • Days and times: Thursdays and/or Fridays, 10am-12pm (flexible)
  • Frequency: bi-weekly
  • Hours: 2 hours per shift

LOCATION: IRC Richmond office

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Educate clients on accessing various online portals such as rent portals, Dominion accounts, and other utilities.
  • Provide step-by-step instructions on creating and managing passwords for different accounts and platforms.
  • Instruct clients on setting up and managing email accounts, including accessing and checking emails regularly.
  • Teach computer basics, including turning on/off the computer, navigating the desktop, and understanding basic functions.
  • Guide clients on utilizing Google search effectively for finding information and navigating the web.
  • Conduct training sessions on using Zoom for virtual meetings and communication purposes.
  • Offer online translation assistance to help clients bridge language barriers in their digital interactions.
  • Provide comprehensive training on online banking practices, including setting up accounts, making transactions, and ensuring security measures.
  • Educate clients on recognizing and avoiding online scams, providing practical tips and strategies for safe internet usage.

REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Demonstrated expertise in using computers, smartphones, and other digital devices.
  • Familiarity with various operating systems (e.g., Windows, macOS, iOS, Android) and common software applications.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to explain complex technical concepts in simple and understandable terms.
  • Willingness to adapt teaching methods and approaches to accommodate the learning needs and preferences of diverse learners.
  • Respect for clients' privacy and confidentiality in handling personal information and digital accounts.
  • Ability to adhere to IRC professional standards and volunteer policies including those around boundaries, confidentiality, COVID-19, etc.
