Background: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover and gain control of their future. IRC teams provide health, infrastructure, learning and economic support to people in 50+ countries worldwide. The IRC also provides support to thousands of refugees resettling in 29 U.S. cities each year through initial housing assistance; case management and referral services; job readiness and placement; community and cultural orientation; health and wellness programs; immigration services; and youth programs.

Scope of Volunteer Work: The Grant Writing Intern will work alongside the Grants Team and Development Team to help secure funding for our various programs. Specific responsibilities of interns will include:

  • Researching, reviewing, and summarizing potential grant opportunities.
  • Assisting in the writing and editing of grant proposals.
  • Creating and updating boilerplate content for proposals.
  • In collaboration with Grants Team, creating training materials on grant writing for staff.
  • Providing overall support to the Grants Team as needed.

Location: Remote; serving both IRC Washington office.

Time Commitment: Minimum 15 hours/week during working hours (M-F, 9am-5pm). Regular schedule required. Minimum 10-week commitment.

Skills/Qualifications:

  • This internship is for undergraduate students, graduate students, or recent college graduates. 
  • Strong written communication skills in English.
  • Strong intercultural communications skills; demonstrated ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and across language barriers.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Familiarity with Windows operating system and confidence in basic computer skills (word processing, email).
  • Strong organizational and time management skills. 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. 
  • Comfortable working in high stress environments. 
  • Willingness to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies.
