H.O.M.E. Connect Program

The Housing, Outreach, Mentorship, and Education Connection Program provides three levels of support for newly arriving families through community groups of volunteers. HOME Connect teams fundraise to provide a rental subsidy, a complete apartment setup and provide 3 months of facilitated connections.

Purpose of the Volunteer Position

Subsidy: Fundraising

HOME teams often comment that raising the funds for the HOME family’s stipend was initially the most daunting aspect of their commitment. However, these same teams consistently report in exit interviews that raising the funds for the stipend proved to be the easiest part of their HOME commitment to fulfill. HOME teams make financial contributions in a variety of forms. Some donate out of pocket, others reach out to their networks to raise funds. We’ve seen overwhelming success for fundraising from teams, often raising their subsidy contribution within a matter of days.

HOME Welcome: Housing Set-Up

Due to the scarcity of affordable housing in the bay area, most families spend 2-4 weeks after arrival in temporary housing. We ask HOME teams to be at the ready during the period between the family’s arrival and their move into permanent housing. That way, when IRC secures permanent housing, the HOME team can set up the apartment as quickly as possible, thereby saving the family precious funds.

HOME Connection

After your assigned refugee family has been in their home for 30 days, we will schedule a formal meeting for the Teams on your team with the refugee family. At this first meeting, we will make introductions, review the terms of the program, and have both the volunteers and the adult family members sign an agreement that establishes a mutually respectful foundation of understanding. .

Administrative Support Volunteer

The Finance and Administration Department is responsible for the IRC in Northern California’s financial accounting functions and the oversight of the financial accounting processes of the offices to support programs. This volunteer position is within the Finance and Administration team and will support the team with various projects and month end close responsibilities included assisting with client coordination support and helping to foster an environment in which both clients and staff thrive in productivity. By providing support to the finance and administration team, the volunteer will help make the transition to Northern California easier for hundreds of refugees. The IRC supports new refugees with financial assistance, language classes, vocational training, and resume coaching.

The Financial Inclusion and Opportunity Program at the IRC works to ensure that all of our clients are equipped with the financial knowledge and tools they’ll need to thrive in the competitive Bay Area. Based on the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s innovative Center for Working Families model, it complements IRC’s wraparound employment and income support services with dedicated in-house financial coaching and access to safe, affordable credit-building products.

Client Coordinator Volunteer

Start date: Ongoing

The Client Coordinator volunteer manages the front desk and waiting lobby. This volunteer will always be the first person people see when they come into the IRC office. A Client Coordinator is responsible for setting and maintaining the overall environment, while clients wait in the lobby. Client Coordinators greet clients and help them access services. The volunteer is responsible for directing client needs to the appropriate staff member as well as answer phones, take messages, and respond to general questions.
