The Homework Support Program connects refugee and newcomer middle and high school students with university volunteers who believe in the power of education to open doors. By giving just one afternoon a week, you help students stay on track with their homework, build confidence, and develop the skills they need to succeed in their new schools.

This is more than tutoring; it’s connection. You become a mentor, a role model, and a steady presence in a student’s academic journey. As you support them, you also grow; building leadership, empathy, and real-world experience that will stay with you long after graduation.

Note: This is an unpaid, in person role at our Tucson, AZ Office.

Availability & Responsibilities:

  • Support students with homework and academic tasks, especially in core subjects
  • Assist with check-in, structured activities, and session wrap-up
  • Encourage participation, confidence, and positive learning habits
  • Work collaboratively with program staff and other volunteers
  • Help create a welcoming and respectful learning environment
  • Participate in orientation and brief practical training
     
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Practical experience in youth education and tutoring
  • Skills in working with multilingual and newcomer students
  • Understanding of effective, inclusive teaching and learning strategies
  • Communication, mentoring, and teamwork skills
  • Insight into refugee services and community-based education
     

Qualifications:

Minimal Qualifications:

  • High school graduate or current college student
  • Interest in education, youth work, or community service
  • Ability to commit at least one afternoon per week
  • Patience, reliability, and positive attitude
  • Tutoring experience in English, Math, or Science is a plus but not required
  • Willingness to learn through brief, practical training
  • Technology requirements:
    • Volunteers will be required to use their own technology tools to work on virtual opportunities.
    • IRC is not responsible for any personal device expenses such as personal smartphones, tablets, hotspots, data charges, etc.
  • Must be able to obtain a AZDES Level-One Clearance Card ($75), pass an internal background check, and register with AZDES CBC. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bi-Lingual proficiency
  • Prior experience and interest working with refugees and immigrants.
  • Previous experience working with children.
