Please Note:  This is an unpaid position, though candidates who self-identify as a member of an underrepresented or marginalized group and fulfill their internship from August through October 2024 can apply for a $3500 stipend for educational expenses.

Background: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover and gain control of their future. IRC teams provide health, infrastructure, learning and economic support to people in 50+ countries worldwide. The IRC also provides support to thousands of refugees resettling in 29 U.S. cities each year through initial housing assistance; case management and referral services; job readiness and placement; community and cultural orientation; health and wellness programs; immigration services; and youth programs.

Scope of Work: The vision of the IRC Seattle Youth Program is that youth from refugee and immigrant backgrounds will have the skills and resources necessary to pursue a future of opportunity. The Youth Program works towards this vision by providing educational and enrichment opportunities to help school-aged youth from refugee and immigrant backgrounds catch up on missed education, adjust to their new school, accelerate English language development, and build positive relationships in the school and community. The Individualized Learning Program (ILP) Summer Intern will work directly to assist the Sr. Specialist for ILP and the ILP educators to provide programming that fits students’ needs including individualized one-one sessions as needed.

Specific duties include:

  • Directly assist newcomer families with enrollment in IRC's Individualized Tutoring Program.
  • Provide academic support to newcomer students through IRC's after-school individualized tutoring programs, and summer learning programs.
  • Provide ongoing systems navigation for newcomer families including following up with families after school enrollment and receiving referrals from IRC staff and school districts for families having challenges effectively connecting with school.
  • Help facilitate volunteer tutor training and ongoing observations, support, and feedback to IRC's volunteer tutor program.
  • Conduct regular family outreach and feedback calls to ensure individualized tutoring is high quality, meeting the needs of students and families, and in alignment with IRC's tutoring guidelines.
  • Work with Sr. Specialist Individualized Learning Program to streamline volunteer processes for 2023-24 school year.
  • Support program monitoring and evaluation by ensuring student demographic and attendance data is recorded and conducting family feedback calls at the conclusion of the program to receive input and feedback.
  • Participate in program meetings, staff development activities, and fully engage as a member of the IRC team.

Location: Remote, but intern must be located within the United States.

Time Commitment: 15-20 hours per week, Monday-Friday 9a-5p. Ideal candidate will begin May 1 and continue through mid to late August 2024. Internship will open from September through December 2024, as well.

Skills/Qualifications: 

  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Pursuing undergraduate degree related to education or related field preferred.
  • Experience or desire to work with middle school and elementary age students; experience in tutoring or academic enrichment programs (e.g. summer or day camps, youth groups, after school programs, sports/recreation programs or clubs).
  • Experience working with multi-lingual students.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to work well with people of diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to maintain responsibility for multiple tasks in the context of a diverse, fast-paced work environment.
  • English proficiency, both spoken and written, and proficiency in relevant language(s) preferred (e.g. Dari, Pashto, Arabic, Ukrainian, Somali, Swahili, Kinyarwanda, Burmese)
  • Cross cultural experience; connection and experience working with communities from refugee and/or immigrant backgrounds.
  • Experience and proficiency utilizing online platforms such as Zoom and Teams, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Committed to anti-racism and continual learning and growth.
  • Flexible and adaptable to changing program and student needs.
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
