TITLE: Vocational ESL Intern
LOCATION: Missoula, Montana
START DATE: Summer or Fall 2024
COMMITMENT: 10+ hours per week during standard business hours for one semester

BACKGROUND:

The International Rescue Committee is the leading nonsectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. The IRC is committed to freedom, human dignity, and self-reliance. This commitment is reflected in well-planned resettlement assistance, global emergency relief, rehabilitation, and advocacy for refugees. Founded in 1933, the IRC is a global leader in emergency relief, rehabilitation, protection of human rights, post-conflict development, resettlement services, and advocacy for those uprooted or affected by conflict and oppression. The resettlement office in Missoula, Montana provides services to approximately 120 newly arriving refugees per year.

 

SCOPE OF WORK:

As a Vocational ESL (VESL) intern, you will be responsible for assisting the VESL instructor with various aspects of curriculum design and implementation, as well as assisting with logistical and planning tasks as they arise. The VESL Plus program will help prepare immigrants and refugees with limited English proficiency to have the skills and knowledge to become successfully employed, understand US financial systems, and become economically self-sufficient. As such, you will be expected to learn about the IRC (history, scope of work, values, etc.), our clients, and core services.All activities will be done in coordination with office staff and under the supervision of the VESL instructor.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Support the VESL instructor with the creation of linguistically sensitive and culturally relevant curriculum materials
  • Assist with data management, such as attendance records and case notes
  • Support with the development and administration of student evaluation tools
  • Assist the VESL instructor with implementing curriculum and teaching courses, when necessary
  • Support the creation and maintenance of strong community partnerships with local service providers
  • Provide support and guidance to volunteers when necessary
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

             

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Experience or strong interest in Social services, English as a Second Language Instruction, or related field
  • Motivated, flexible, and able to work independently, prioritize, and manage time effectively
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook)
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and work as a team member in a cross-cultural environment
  • Able to pass an IRC background check through HireRight
  • Experience working with refugees/diverse populations is a plus
  • Fluency in an additional language relevant to current refugee populations is a plus: Swahili, Arabic, Pashto, Dari, Spanish, and Ukrainian

 

POSITION LOGISTICS:

  • Compensation: This is an unpaid internship – college credit available upon request
  • Hours: flexible, minimum of 10 scheduled hours per week
  • Supervisor: VESL Instructor
  • Complete an Intern Orientation which covers: The role of the IRC, IRC policies to which all interns must adhere, and how to track your internship hours
