Description
Group events for adults willing to positively mentor youth ages 15-24 in social, civic, educational or career type activities. Individual mentors for 1:1 match another option available (timing is flexible for those connections). Most activities will occur on days that students have out of school and will range in timing depending on the activity.
Role
Activities will be planned by IRC program staff with mentors and mentees attending. Transportation of youth will be by IRC staff. Mentors will be free to engage with the youth during the activities, building positive relationships. Individual mentor roles are also available which would occur weekly by phone/text/email or in person and would be dependent on mentor and mentee schedule availability.
Purpose
This is a great opportunity for individuals to make an immediate impact on the education and cultural experiences of youth who are eager to learn by role modeling. Various events provide ways to build positive relationships and to learn about different cultures on both sides of the mentor/mentee relationship.
How to become a volunteer:
- Attend one of the IRC in Wichita’s volunteer information meetings. For information about dates and times of these meetings please send an inquiry to VolunteerKS@Rescue.org. Attending one of these meetings is mandatory to proceed with your volunteer application.
- Submit your volunteer/Intern application online at: Step 1: IRC Wichita Volunteer and Intern Application
- Your materials will be reviewed to determine your eligibility and qualification.
- If selected for an interview you will be called by IRC’s volunteer coordinator.
- Successful interviews are proceeded by a background check. Your volunteer or intern placement will only be confirmed after your background check and references have been cleared. The IRC encourages but does not require that you donate $40 to go towards your background check to help offset the cost of your background check.
- You will be contacted to attend an orientation. All interns and volunteers must attend an orientation before moving forward with their volunteer application.
