About the Program

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Silver Spring is seeking dedicated volunteers to work individually or in small groups in a classroom setting, depending on the program track. Tutors will provide academic and social support in a safe, welcoming environment through English-based enrichment activities.

Program Tracks:

  1. Virtual (Ages 5–10): Tuesdays, 5:00–6:15 PM
  2. In-Person Middle School (Ages 11–14): Wednesdays, 3:30–5:30 PM
  3. In-Person High School (Ages 15–18): Thursdays, 2:00–4:00 PM

Tutor Expectations:

  • Provide one-on-one tutoring to support academic growth and learning goals
  • Foster a positive learning relationship through guidance and encouragement
  • Track progress, give feedback, and adapt strategies to student needs
  • Attend all sessions or notify staff if unable to attend

Tutor Requirements:

  • Must be 18+
  • Background check required
  • Complete orientation and cultural sensitivity training
  • Conduct yourself in a reliable, empathetic, and culturally respectful manner

Key Support Areas:

Volunteers may provide support by:

  • English Language Practice: Supporting conversational English, reading comprehension, writing skills, and vocabulary development
  • Homework Help: Assisting students with daily homework, class assignments, and test preparation across subjects
  • Academic Skill Building: Supporting time management, study skills, organization, and goal setting
  • Understanding School Culture: Helping youth understand expectations in U.S. classrooms, grading systems, and communication with teachers
  • Encouragement & Mentorship: Building positive relationships that support confidence, motivation, and academic growth
  • Resource Navigation: Connecting students to ESL resources, tutoring tools, and school-based or community academic supports

  • Culturally respectful and globally minded
  • Flexible, patient, and empathetic
  • Passionate about supporting youth success
  • Familiar with college and vocational pathways
  • Knowledgeable about the U.S. education system and financial aid
  • Comfortable using Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, virtual learning platforms, and tools like Google Translate

Bonus Skills:

  • Multilingual abilities, especially in Spanish, Arabic, Dari, Pashto, Kinyarwanda, Kirundi, French, or Haitian Creole
