Background: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover and gain control of their future. IRC teams provide health, infrastructure, learning and economic support to people in 40 countries worldwide. The IRC also provides support to thousands of refugees resettling in 26 U.S. cities each year through housing assistance, case management and referral services, job readiness and placement, English language training, community and cultural orientation, health and wellness programs, immigration services and other community integration activities. 

Location: Office is in South King County, WA area (outside Seattle, WA). Interns can work remotely. Pacific or Mountain Time Zone preferred. 

Duration: May-August 2024, October 2024-January 2025

Time Commitment: 15-20 hours/week, Monday-Thursday

Responsibilities: The IRC Youth Program Virtual Summer Intern will be responsible for calling and enrolling referred families in IRC Youth Programs. Intern will assist with implementation of the Virtual Summer Reading program for grades K-5. The intern will occasionally teach lessons to small groups of students. The Virtual Summer Reading program focuses on literacy and social emotional development using culturally appropriate texts in online group classes. The intern will also make post program feedback calls and data collection to contribute to reporting. We are seeking an intern who is patient, responsible, reliable, and works well with people from other cultures. Interns must have reliable internet and computer; and feel comfortable working independently.  

Requirements

  • Must be culturally sensitive, respectful of diverse backgrounds and able to creatively work with multilingual students who are English language learners; previous cross-cultural communication experience is a plus.  
  • Strong applicants will have an interest in student engagement strategies and be flexible, persistent, responsible, proactive, and effective communicators.
  • Previous experience working with youth and families; understanding of basic school systems desired.  
  • Interns must have reliable internet, phone service and computer; must feel comfortable working independently, while working alongside a team.   
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English; additional fluency in languages spoken by youth arriving as refugees helpful, but not required.  
  • Willingness to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies.  

Preferred

  • Preference to candidates with the ability to speak Dari/Pashto or Ukranian/Russian. 
  • Preference to candidates with teaching experience.
