Background: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover and gain control of their future. IRC teams provide health, infrastructure, learning and economic support to people in 50+ countries worldwide. The IRC also provides support to thousands of refugees resettling in 29 U.S. cities each year through initial housing assistance; case management and referral services; job readiness and placement; community and cultural orientation; health and wellness programs; immigration services; and youth programs.

Scope of Volunteer Work: The Development Team at IRC Seattle plays a critical, behind-the-scenes role in raising unrestricted funding for program implementation, sharing the IRC’s work to the community to garner community engagement and investment, and fostering relationships with external parties that multiply the reach and impact of IRC Seattle’s welcome to refugees and newcomers to Puget Sound. The Volunteer and Development Intern will provide valuable input to the Development Team by increasing capacity to recruit, retain, and cultivate volunteers; improving volunteer data and data production, maintaining potential donor databases, and providing other services to the Development Team with the goal of improving community engagement, administrative efficiency, and fundraising capacities. 

Specific duties include:

  • Interviewing, ensuring onboarding for prospective volunteers. 
  • Processing monthly Sales Force reports of volunteer hours and ensuring timely and regular that volunteer time log submission. 
  • Maintaining accurate and complete prospective donor records on Sales Force in anticipation of future engagement. 
  • Assisting in employer appreciation activities, such as handwritten thank you notes, Facebook posts, regular communication with volunteers and prospective volunteers regarding questions and/or responsibilities. 
  • In-kind donation drive management and posting within various communities. 

Location: Hybrid remote and IRC Office at 1200 S 192nd St, SeaTac, WA 98148.

Time Commitment: 15-20 hours/week during IRC office hours (M-F, 9am-5pm). Regular schedule required. Minimum 10-week commitment. 

Skills/Qualifications: 

  • Robust intercultural communications skills; demonstrated ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and across language barriers.  
  • Ability to handle sensitive volunteer, donor, and prospective donor information confidentially.  
  • Commitment to timely and professional communication with external parties. 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.   
  • Familiarity with Windows operating system and confidence in basic computer skills (word processing, email, data entry).   
  • Willingness to learn new software.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English; additional fluency in one of the following languages desirable but not required: Farsi/Dari, Swahili, Arabic, Ukrainian, or Tigrinya.   
  • Willingness to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies .
