Position Title: Youth Program Tutor (virtual) 

Location: Silver Spring, Maryland 

Position Term:  Fall Term will start on 9/17/2024 (tentative) and run through 12/12/2024 (tentative). 

Position Hours: Youth Program Tutors will select one of the three sessions below to attend on a weekly basis throughout the Fall term. 

  • Tuesday 4:30pm-6:00pm 
  • Wednesday 4:30pm-6:00pm 
  • Thursday 4:30pm-6:00pm

Trainings:

New and returning volunteers are required to complete one Youth Program Tutor Training prior to volunteering with the youth program. There will be two training options for new and returning volunteers to attend.

Training option 1: Wednesday, September 4th,  6-7pm ET on Zoom

Training option 2: Wednesday, October 2nd, 6-7pm ET on Zoom

 

Background: Over the last year, the IRC in Silver Spring Youth program has provided services to over 300 resettled refugee and asylee youth in Prince George and Montgomery County. The youth program works to empower newly arrived youth to obtain the knowledge, skills, and education need to integrate, be self sufficient, and assert control over their futures. Our services include but are not limited to; school enrollment and orientation, after school tutoring programs, community service trips, college campus visits, and summer academy. 

 

Scope of Work: IRC Youth Program Tutors provide tutoring, mainly consisting of homework help, essay writing/editing, and English language learning support. Tutors support each student with the homework/assignment they require, spanning across academic subject/disciplines, and English language development level.  Every Youth Program Tutor will be paired with 1-2 students to work with on a weekly basis. If the Youth Program Tutor's paired student misses a session the Tutor will work with any student available in need of assistance. 

 

Essential Position Functions:

  • Uphold full commitment to weekly schedule of tutoring sessions without absence or tardiness.
  • Communicate any absences to IRC Youth Services Coordinator at least 24 hours in advance.
  • Facilitate tutoring sessions to refugee and asylee youth, assessing students' language abilities and tailoring instruction to meet their needs. 
  • Support tutee in their English language development. 
  • Submit a case note regarding each of their tutees’ progress for each session of tutoring within 24 hours of the date of service.
  • Complete and submit all required forms/trainings by deadline, as assigned.
  • Work and communicate with IRC staff and volunteers as needed.
  • Uphold all IRC Youth Program and Child Safeguarding policies. 

Requirements:

  • Clear IRC background check by deadline in order to work with minors and/or vulnerable populations.
  • Participate in IRC Youth Program Volunteer Training and screening.  
  • Demonstrate interest in learning about IRC history, philosophy, global work, and local efforts. 
  • Demonstrate respect for clients and staff from all racial, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, or religious background.
