Location: primarily off-site in Baltimore city or county. Exact location will be disclosed to volunteers. During COVID-19, mentorships will take place during a weekly group Zoom session on Wednesday evenings from 5:30-8pm.
Responsibilities: youth success coaches work with 1-2 refugee youth ages 15-24 to provide support as they transition to the Baltimore region. Coaches focus on practicing English, completing homework, socialization activities and integration to the local community. Based on each mentee's needs and identified goals, coaching pairs may visit local parks, explore career development resources, visit libraries and museums, and set goals. These activities may also be done remotely.
Time commitment: Coaches must commit to meeting with their mentees for 2-4 hours per week for 12 weeks. Coaches are matched in cohorts so that pairs can participate in structured events throughout their 12 week program. The initial coach and mentee meeting is facilitated by IRC using an interpreter in the client's preferred language. Coaching is tailored to increase social support with activity-based learning. The next coaching cohort is scheduled to begin in June 2020.
Skills & Qualifications: the youth success coach must display an interest in supporting young people in their education and career goals, and helping to build positive social networks. Experience working in a multicultural setting or with English language learners is preferred, but not required. Coaches should display creativity and initiative to support the self-suffiency and integration of clients, and be able to work independently. Volunteers with a special interest in education, career development, or exploring activities in Baltimore may be a good fit for the youth success coach role.
